Race + Architecture - How do we decolonise design? Architecture Unknown July 2020 Podcast Black out - Architecture Unknown in support of Selasi Setufe from Black Females in Architecture The supremacy of white architecture is a huge problem for an industry which under represents black and minority backgrounds by a wide margin but has such an influence over so many lives. In this podcast we are so lucky to be joined by our friend and role model Selasi Setufe, co-founder of the Black Females in Architecture network and RIBA Council member, to discuss the path to becoming a black female architect. Black Females in Architecture - Diversity doesn't require only equality it needs equity to be effective Discussing Selasi's journey as well as what drove her to become an architect originally we touch on the lack of representation in architectural curricula, the variance in the spatial character of the home and the gulf between equality and equity that we must still cross. 1/9

  • Holme House Farm | Architecture Unknown | Manchester

141 Holme House Farm Site Overlay with Roof Plan.jpg OPTION 4.jpg Option 5 Site.jpg Site Overlay with Roof Plan.jpg 1/4 Client Private Client Location Kendal, Lake District Budget £300k Collaborators Downloads A WikiHome Nestled in the Farm The proposal is for a new build house nestled within woodland as part of the redevelopment of Holme House Farm. The aim is to provide an eco-family home that embraces the unique rural-edge setting, the site and it’s constraints, the neighbour’s previously completed designs and the Cumbrian backdrop but also the character, lifestyle and desires of the clients. The project’s core aim is to create a space that is not only warm, joyful and uplifting clients and their children but enhances the natural world and reduces their carbon footprint. This is a space that will host parties and gathering with friends, neighbours and family but will also be a space that encourages and nourishes the creative spirit and soul of the family. We want to create a building that is a amalgamation of the clients and the site. This plan makes the most of the width by having two living spaces stacked vertically and connected via a double heigh void. This would create an incredible entertaining and play environment that connects to a significant balcony at first floor level. This scheme captures the essence of an upside down house. The position of the balcony and the screening of the trees would make this quite a secluded spot which would get amazing evening sunshine. This direct connection between the primary living space and the balcony would make this a special space to spend time.

  • We won an RIBAJ Rising Star Award 2021! | Architecture Unknown

We won an RIBAJ Rising Star Award 2021! Architecture Unknown Nov 2021 Awards Corny photos with our print copy of the RIBAJ November 2021! So we didn't take these corny photos just for fun... I'm really pleased to announce that one of our Director's Charlie Butterwick has been awarded an RIBAJ Rising Star 2021. This has been a really humbling experience and we're so proud (and somewhat dazed) in the Architecture Unknown office to have been recognised. The RIBAJ article (https://www.ribaj.com/intelligence/rising-stars-2021-awards-winners-charlie-butterwick-architecture-unknown-founder) highlighted our commitment "to delivering sustainable, cost-effective solutions that his clients can participate in constructing" alongside our vision "to make the public and residents partners in design; to promote shared values and identity; and to design buildings that inspire clients and champion their values." We couldn't put it better ourselves! Capture of the RIBAJ's Rising Star webpage (https://www.ribaj.com/intelligence/agitating-for-change-rising-stars-intro-2021) The judges, here specifically Yasmin Al-Ani Spence said "He is doing a community project [and in so doing] is changing the structure of how these are done. It is a nice, simple, honest representation of someone who works hard and has a good, solid idea". We couldn't be prouder of being recognised in this way and is a testament to the whole team's aspirational thinking, drive to deliver against the odds and 100% belief in the power of the people to deliver beautiful buildings. We don't do what we do for the awards but it's darn-nice for your passion and professional expertise to be seen. Thank you to the RIBAJ and Origin for organising this years awards and we look forward to meeting and learning from all the other finalists when we meet them in person later this year! 1/8

  • WikiHouse SKYLARK Launch Event | Architecture Unknown

WikiHouse SKYLARK Launch Event Architecture Unknown March 2022 Article Skylark Launch Event It was with great pleasure that the AU team were invited to attend the recent launch event of the new updated Wikihouse building system, Skylark at the Building Centre in London. It's not very often that we get the chance to venture south, especially in these Covid times, so we jumped at the chance and the whole team hopped on a train for a big day out in London. The launch event was pencilled in for 6pm, however, the WikiHouse foundation and the team at Open Systems Lab were building their excellent protype in the late morning, giving us the chance to experience its assembly first hand, and pitch in where we can. We can safely say this didn't take too long and the team of volunteers had it assmebled in no time. This allowed us to sneak off and be wandering northerners in the big smoke. We explored the sites and sounds the area and then nipped into British Muesum, may be not the most architecturally relevant place we could visit but a wonderful place none the less. As always, a few books were aquired before we headed back for the party. Clayton lays out the stats The launch party was extremely well attended, with the upstairs space at the building centre packed out for the big reveal. Stiring speaches by Alastair, Clayton and his team ignited a fire in the crowd and our team, the wonderful canapes and free beers also helped. But in all seriousness, this new Skylark system can be a game changer for WikiHouse. Open Systems Lab (the creators) have evolved the original system from Wren, actually this is system is based on a completely different structural approach and is accompanied by all the relevant strutural calculations required, making it far more accessible for the common person. I won't go into the details, but it is certainly worth going to the website and having a read. It certainly is revolutionary in places but we do think it does come with some limitations. It is our view that our own branch of Wren, which we call Magpie, sits nicely, beside and complementarly to Skylark. We believe that there is a place for both systems and each systems suitablity will depend on the architectural and thus structural resolution the design seeks. This means that the AU team will bring the Skylark system into our repetioire of construction solution options, adding our expertise to the system but also continuing to develop Magpie along side Skylark. Exciting times ahead on the WikiHouse and self build front. 1/17

The first aim is to bring the attic back to life by creating a space that is open and connected whilst creating a play-haven that looks out into beautiful views at every window. Spaces need to be light filled, and make the attic a wholesome multi-purpose family zone by combining modern and traditional elements. Having discussed the design in detail during the Design in a Day session we agreed that the attic would be divided into two mains sections. One section to accommodate two bedrooms and one bathroom whilst the other end is a open landing, balcony, play room and office. This design option looks at creating a clear landing upon entering the attic space. The existing dormer will be changed to full glass with an access to a new balcony. This enforces a visual connection from the landing into the green belt, creating an indoor-outdoor picture moment, where pool is played whilst admiring the view. On the left, through a set of pivot doors that can be left open for easy circulation, is a sensory play zone and box window library that connects into a private office. On the right are two bedrooms and a shared bathroom for guests. One of the bedrooms converts the dormer into a modern box window whilst the other bedroom introduces skylights and a large gable end window that is perfect for sunset views. Under the eaves are storage drawers that can be rolled out. Secondly the aim is to an internal energy upgrade to the existing envelope of the house. To do this we will need to internally insulate several rooms and bathrooms, insulate the roof but using the existing structure and create a side dormer (that replaces the existing side dormer) that creates higher ceiling for easy circulation. The aim is also to minimise thermal bridging and increase thermal capacity within the home. We will also be looking into ventilation/ heating systems that are cost effective.

  • Nike Air Max 95 Retrospective | Architecture Unknown | Manchester

055 Nike Air Max 95 Retrospective 1/8 Client SEVENSTORE Location Liverpool Budget £10k Collaborators Nike - www.nike.com Downloads Exploring the heart of Liverpool Conceived by Sergio Lozano, during the mid ‘90s, the Air Max 95 design took shape via cues from the human body, with a lacing system inspired by a set of ribs, a spine inspired outer sole and a mesh and suede upper representing muscle fibres. At the time is was visionary and redefined the sneaker for a generation. Nike’s fearless endeavour to innovate and push the boundaries of sneaker design resembles the innovative fearless City of Liverpool and its people. Emerging from the muds of the Mersey, its been through its ups and downs, through continued reinvention, a strength of will and character it has survived and grown to become a world class city with a unique and strong identity, with trainers and sport athleisure wear, epitomised Nike brand and the AM95s, at its heart. Our task is to design an artistic installation that captures the essence of this iconic sneaker against the back drop of the city reborn. Our first concept, From the Mud, imagines the spirit of Liverpool, the Scouser, emerging from the muddy earth on a journey of self-actualisation with the Air Max 95 as the source of their power. This concept would see the construction of huge chest/torso cavity filling the floor to ceiling height of the Sevenstore basement with arms grasping the pillars as a figure pulls itself from the earth. Our second concept, X-Ray Deconstruct 110s, imagines a deconstructed 110, reordered into a walk through piece that is an allusion to the 90s rave culture into which it was born. The technical elements of the shoe are exploded to dig down to the heart of the aesthetic that changed casual fashion so drastically. Defined against a lighting scheme that journeys from dark into light, this project aims to immerse and then reveal in fragments the challenges to the 110s' iconic success.
