House + Garden matched with Light + Space

This project reimagines the ground floor of a traditional home to enhance the everyday experience through light, space, and seamless transitions. The design strategically opens up the rear of the property, embedding the new spaces more fluidly into the rhythm of the existing house while extending its relationship with the garden.

A stepped threshold leads down into the extension, easing the shift in level and establishing a clear yet gentle spatial distinction between old and new. Internally, the space is anchored by an open-plan kitchen and dining area- now the social heart of the home- where family life can unfold across a generous and flexible layout.

To the rear, floor-to-ceiling corner glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and garden, allowing the space to breathe. Sliding doors open out completely, extending living outward and allowing the garden to become an informal part of the home during warmer months.

Material and light are choreographed throughout. A large rooflight over the utility space- accessed directly from the exterior- brings daylight deep into the plan, while a crittal-style internal door with fluted glass further distributes light to the inner rooms.

A built-in window seat sits within the glazed corner, providing a quiet place to pause and reconnect with the garden, while the gently concealed refuse store and canopy-covered steps create a sense of considered functionality- everything in its place, but never at the expense of the overall flow.
