Sunlit Spaces, Secret Nooks and Split Levels
This project in Hale reimagines a traditional home to create a modern, light-filled, and highly functional family environment while respecting its original character. The brief was to open up and connect spaces, improve circulation, and integrate practical elements without compromising the home’s architectural integrity.
The plan prioritises flexible family living. An open-plan kitchen that connects directly into the garden form sthe social heart of the home, with a sculptural island dividing functional prep space from casual seating. Expansive glazing and strategically positioned rooflights create “habitable moments,” filling the interiors with natural light. Thoughtful touches, such as a built-in reading nook, hidden homework table, and a snug with a media wall, provide opportunities for quiet retreat while supporting everyday family life.
Integrated planter boxes and a level patio extend indoor living outdoors, while subtle landscaping and tree planting provide privacy and reinforce the home’s connection with nature. A basement conversion includes a wine cellar and larder, with integrated shelving for display and storage, rounding out the practical amenities of the house.
The extension is designed to feel like a natural evolution of the original home. A new pitched roof continues the garage roofline to create a harmonious silhouette, while brick quoins and detailed headers maintain the property’s architectural language. At the rear, the contemporary gable balances masonry and glazing: a horizontal brick band cuts through the central glass, introducing texture and connecting the extension visually to the original home. A pronounced overhang canopy adds depth, shelter, and layered shadow lines, while traditional pitched detailing ensures the silhouette remains respectful of the original proportions.
