In Awe of Brick Curves

This residential reconfiguration centres on creating a spacious and functional family home, layered with moments of calm and utility. The ground floor has been reimagined to establish an open and connected layout that encourages sociable living, while the first-floor improvements consolidate comfort and functionality.

The proposal draws a clear distinction between old and new through material and form. The first-floor extension is designed to sit seamlessly within the existing fabric, using matching brickwork and subtle render to harmonise with the original architecture. In contrast, the ground floor extension is treated with restraint and modernity- robust in form but light in expression.

A crisp brick palette, articulated with Flemish bond and delicate brick returns, creates rhythm and hierarchy at key junctions- entrances, thresholds, and sills. A side door provides direct access to the utility room, supporting a more flexible and practical routine for family life (muddy paws included).

Glazed openings and a carefully calibrated desk-height window in the rear elevation ensure a continued connection to nature and natural light, while also responding to internal function. At the rear, a large patio space completes the sequence, offering a generous, sunlit terrace ideal for social gatherings and summer evenings.
