The Testbed
The existing housing estate in Port Glasgow faces a familiar challenge: how to provide high-quality, sustainable homes for current and future residents while working within tight financial and spatial constraints. Several small “gap sites” throughout the estate remained underused, yet traditional development approaches made them difficult and expensive to build on.
River Clyde Housing needed a solution that could deliver new homes, strengthen the community, and support the long-term regeneration of the estate.
The proposal introduces a bold yet practical vision for beautiful, modular housing that can be delivered efficiently while supporting the local community whilst forming the foundation of a Sustainable Tenure Model, enabling the wider regeneration of the estate while securing stable, high-quality homes for future generations.
Using the WikiHouse open-source construction system, the homes are designed as modular structures fabricated from precision-cut components. These parts slot together with minimal specialist tools, dramatically reducing the need for conventional construction methods and lowering overall costs.
This approach transforms housing development into a collaborative process. Local residents, including those with no previous building experience, can participate directly in constructing the homes, while surrounding trades and services are sourced from within the local area.
