Raise the Curtain
The proposal introduces a lateral extension to the existing theatre building, unlocking the full potential of the site through the creation of a flexible new volume. Conceived as a multi-functional performance and community space, this addition accommodates a variety of uses, from a reception and breakout lounge to a secondary stage area, enriching the theatre’s programming and spatial offer.
The architectural intervention also enables a transformation of the main stage, extending it laterally to incorporate dedicated left and right wings. This spatial enhancement, together with increased ceiling height, supports a wider range of set configurations and more ambitious production requirements. The main auditorium has been reconfigured to seat 57 as standard, with the option to expand to 74 by introducing additional rows to the front and rear, offering adaptability without compromising spatial clarity.
Access remains unchanged, preserving the theatre’s established public interface. A new set of double doors announces the entrance to the reception foyer and bar, while reconfigured WCs, discreetly located beneath the raked seating, introduce improved functionality with their own independent lobby.
The new bar and storage unit are positioned at the front, engaging visually with the new event space and enhancing its use potential. A dedicated performers’ vestibule provides a seamless connection between back-of-house and both performance zones, and offers accessible ramped entry to the main stage.
Generous undercroft storage is now integrated beneath the tiered seating, while the new stage wings support the introduction of large-scale scenic elements, up to 10 feet in height, that can be moved fluidly in and out during performances.
