For the Scouts, Band and Park!

Meltham Council approached Architecture Unknown to lend a hand in community engagement and design for the exciting development of a new community centre/pavilion at Robert Ashton Memorial Park. The scheme is to house the local Scout troop, Brass Band practice suite and a community food pavilion including public toilets.

The design will be split across two levels and include the demolition of the existing grounds maintenance building which is in poor condition. The site fronts onto Huddersfield Road and backs onto the newly refurbished play area which is situated approximately three metres above the level of the existing lodge. The new community pavilion is to be designed to have entrances at both levels and activate the park space with the potential for a range of new uses beyond the anchor tenants of the Scouts and Brass Band.

The scheme is envisioned as a WikiHouse timber-framed construction and is to be sensibly sustainable to reduce energy bills as much as is feasible within the budget. Overall, the scheme must be designed with the community in mind and be co-created as an opportunity to maximise their reasonable involvement. In this way, the route to the creation of this new building becomes an essential aspect of the town’s evolving identity.
