Spa in the Sky? Say Less
This proposal explores the introduction of an L-shaped dormer to the rear of the property, designed to create a self-contained bedroom suite on a newly formed second floor. Accessed via a compact winder stair from the first floor, the new level is arranged around a modest landing, which discreetly integrates an airing cupboard and offers practical access to the eaves for additional storage.
With a generous dormer footprint, the spatial strategy allows for a well-proportioned double bedroom accompanied by a carefully planned ensuite. The ensuite is arranged in two zones- a dry area for the vanity and WC, and a fully tiled wet room featuring a freestanding bath and rainforest shower, creating a spa-like atmosphere through the use of soft-toned mosaic finishes.
A corner window punctuates the bedroom and captures views across the nearby allotments. Given the proximity to the tram line, we recommend a triple-glazed assembly to enhance acoustic insulation. A structural column positioned at the window junction- required for roof support- has been conceived as an opportunity rather than a constraint, with potential to be expressed as a subtle internal feature using colour and texture.
In addition, we’ve carved out a concealed workspace within the volume of the bedroom, forming a flexible, integrated home office. When closed, the desk and chair tuck away entirely behind seamless joinery. When open, the workspace is bathed in natural light from a Velux rooflight positioned directly above, offering a serene and focused environment with skyward views.
