Rotunda in the Heart of Cheshire

Following a comprehensive exploration of design priorities during the Design in a Day session, it became clear that a fully open-plan arrangement would not serve the lifestyle or spatial character desired. Retaining the existing structural walls allowed us to preserve the integrity of three distinct zones, fostering a sense of intimacy while encouraging clear spatial definition.

This proposal reimagines the entry sequence, relocating the main entrance to the heart of the home. Arriving now into a light-filled living space anchored by a double-sided log burner- echoing the hearth in the existing kitchen-m the home’s centre is imbued with warmth and cohesion. A single, sculptural timber staircase replaces the former dual-stair configuration, simplifying circulation while liberating valuable first-floor area. This move reshapes the landing, enabling every corner of the upper floor to be meaningfully used.

To the left, a snug offers a dedicated space for quieter evenings, animated by newly introduced floor-to-ceiling glazing and French doors, inviting natural light deep into the plan. On the right, the kitchen and dining room switch positions to optimise views and access to the garden. A generous set of French doors and a widened patio terrace support alfresco living and create a stronger connection to the landscape beyond.

Extending into the former outhouse, a new utility room and discreet WC complete the ground floor programme- a practical yet seamless addition that aligns with the rhythm of everyday life.

Upstairs, a compacted original bedroom allows for the introduction of a corridor leading into a newly formed master suite. Here, an ensuite and a walk-in store offer comfort and convenience, while Bedroom 3 is preserved in its current proportions. A bespoke sewing nook, facing the side garden, completes the plan- a quiet, functional corner enriched by natural light and built-in storage.
